Why the first 10?

This helps to keep it light.

The vital opening pages are where the foundations are laid, where key characters are introduced and tone is established.

If there are places where your intentions as a writer aren’t crystal clear in those pages, that’s powerful data.

If everything you hoped to communicate is landing, even better. 

What I do: I respond to text the same way I respond to performance. I’ll tell you, truthfully but tenderly, what I’m getting. I’m honest about what I think I’ve understood clearly, what I think has been implied. How I felt reading it. If I got confused.


What I don’t do: give you my opinion on if the material is ‘good’. This isn’t about my taste, it’s about where the words on the page are working effectively - and where they’re raising questions.  

The aim is to help you locate the gaps between what you’re transmitting and what I’m receiving.
