Feedback is only as good as the momentum it creates.
Who cares if it was ‘useful’
if you feel like you’re back at the bottom of the mountain,
when it comes to actually writing again.
My writing was confused and confusing when I first started.
It took ages for me to get good.
I’ve received a lot of feedback over those ages.
I also read all the books. I used all the formats. Beat sheets, Treatments, Save the Cat, the 3 act structure (which is secretly also the 5 act structure.) Fuck-a-structure. Voice over isn’t always bad, sometimes it saves you. Character and Plot are not separate things. etc.
Here are my thoughts;
It takes time to write good stuff
There’s no guarantee you will get paid well to write good stuff
So what makes it worth the time it takes?
The satisfaction and growth of writing the thing you really wanted to write.
The thing that gives you life.
This session isn’t a traditional set of notes. It’s a fast conversation that covers a lot of ground.
It’s designed to create momentum.
It has three main sections
Headlines. 2-3 notes/questions regarding big picture aspects - genre, tone.
Questions to you. A few lines of inquiry on a more detailed level. Looking at a particular scene or character arc.
Questions to me. Are there any particular parts of the script you want to examine?
In the background; we share access to a Google Doc. I post my Headlines and Questions in there and add in notes as we speak, you are welcome to do the same.
A set of actionable notes arises out of this session, on this Document, which you’re free to download and keep working with.
